About the Network version of Sequencher

Sequencher licenses are stored on keys that attach to your computer either through a Parallel or a USB port. In a stand-alone version of Sequencher the key provides a license only to the computer to which it is attached. For the networked licenses of Sequencher the hardware key is installed on one computer, the Server, but the license or licenses travel over the network. Two software tools, KeyServer and KeyAccess Client, confer the ability for the license to move from one workstation to another. When you purchase a network license of Sequencher, Gene Codes provides you with light versions of these Server and the Client tools. However, you may also use Sequencher with the full versions of KeyServer and Key Access Client, which are available from Sassafras.

The Server software is installed only on the computer that you designate as the server. You install the Sequencher and the Client software on each computer where you want to run Sequencher. The installation of the Client software includes defining the IP address or DNS name of the Server holding the Sequencher license key. Therefore, each time you launch Sequencher the following events will take place.

  1. Sequencher searches for a locally installed key, if one is found, Sequencher launches.
  2. If no key is found locally, Sequencher finds the Client software The Client software uses the IP address to locate the Server over the network, and the Server checks the number of available licenses. If a license is available, Sequencher launches.
  3. If a license is not available, Sequencher offers the user the opportunity to launch in demo mode and to be alerted when a license becomes available
  4. Sequencher alerts you when a license is free. You may then launch Sequencher in the full mode.

Getting Ready

The Client software, KeyAccess, is the same for both Sequencher Server and the Full Version of KeyServer by Sassafras.

  • The KeyServer software on the Sequencher Server Computer must be installed first, and running.
  • You will need to know the IP Address or DNS name for the Sequencher Server Computer that is running KeyServer.
  • Shut down open applications.
  • If you've been using a stand-alone version of Sequencher on the Client machine, you must remove the Hardware Key. If Sequencher finds a stand-alone key, it will never talk to the KeyServer.

Installing the KeyAccess Client

  • Insert and open the Sequencher Server Client CD or open the Sequencher Server Clients folder on the Sequencher Server Administration CD.
  • Launch the Sequencher Server Client Setup application by double clicking on the Setup icon.
  • Click Next when prompted by the Setup Wizard.
  • Click Close to exit the Setup.
  • RESTART.

Log on to the Server

  • Go to the Start menu\Programs\Gene Codes\Sequencher Server Client and launch KeyAccess (or double-click the shortcut that was left open immediately after installation of the client).

If this is the first time you’ve run KeyAccess, you will see the following dialog:

  • Click OK to dismiss the dialog.
  • Launch KeyAccess again.
  • Enter the IP address of the Sequencher Server Computer in the Connection field.
  • Click the Logon button.

A KeyAccess dialog will appear telling you that you are now logged onto the specified Sequencher Server/KeyServer. KeyAccess will automatically log on to this server whenever you start your client computer. You will not have to manually launch KeyAccess again unless you choose to change servers.

Installation of the network software is complete. You may now install the Sequencher Software.
